Just Like Me
I never exactly said you had intelligence.
“Nobody likes a smart-ass!”
Just that you were not necessarily brilliant.
“What were you thinking?”
I never exactly said you were attractive.
“What? You think you’re cute?”
Just that you not necessarily gorgeous.
“I don’t believe you went out looking like that.”
I never exactly said you were a leader.
“Why would you tell them to do that?”
Just that you did not necessarily know where you were going.
“I told you, should have turned left.”
I never exactly said you were good with words.
“The speech could have been better.”
Just that you were not necessarily good with vocabulary.
“You made a mess of the crossword.”
I never exactly said you were funny.
“Oh, you told a joke!”
Just that you not necessarily a comic.
“Was that supposed to be funny?”
Yet, you grew up to be
a leader, and a wordsmith
with a good sense of humor.
Because despite all the words I don’t say
Oft times with tongue firmly planted
You were secure in the words I do say
”Mama loves you – you’re just like me!”
